Bali tournament magazine feature

The following is a reproduction of a feature written by Barry Wood that appears in the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions offical programme. The event begins in Bali on Thursday:

When Ana Ivanovic arrived in Bali a year ago she was already on a high, having just won her first title in two years in Linz. And then it got better, as she beat off all-comers to lift the title at the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions.

She was a popular winner, as she played some of the best tennis of her career to overcome Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kimiko Date-Krumm and Alisa Kleybanova, her victory contrasting so positively against her only previous visit to the paradise isle in 2006 when she fell to Olga Puchkova in her opening match.

No wonder she wanted to keep playing, but the season was at an end and she had no choice but to take a break and prepare for 2011. She then experienced a setback after suffering an injury while representing Serbia together with Novak Djokovic at the Hopman Cup, and that badly affected her preparation for the Australian Open. But she eventually got back on track and had yet another successful season. The highlights were a semi-final in Birmingham, another in Carlsbad, and quarter-finals at Indian Wells and Pattaya. Not too bad.

Along the way she re-engaged Scott Byrnes as her fitness trainer and took on Nigel Sears as her coach. Finding the right coach wasn’t easy. Ana knew that she didn’t want someone controlling her 24 hours a day, and she knew after so long on the tour how to play. So it was a case of looking for someone who could fine-tune her game, make one or two adjustments, and give her the personal space she needed. She eventually found that in Sears, whose daughter Kim is the long-time girlfriend of Andy Murray.

Sears had worked successfully with Amanda Coetzer and then Daniela Hantuchova while both were in the top 10, before he decided to spend more time at home and was given the job of Head of Women’s Tennis at the LTA. He couldn’t resist the invitation to work with Ana, however, and the partnership has been working well since they teamed up in July.

Byrnes, who worked together with Ana from July 2006 until July 2009 before, like Sears, opting to take some time off from the tennis circuit, also worked with several of the best women in the game - Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva and Victoria Azarenka - before re-joining Ana’s team after Wimbledon this year.

Ana knows that having a good support team is essential in being a success, as she recently told Indonesian magazine The Yak.

“There are many factors, and actually talent is just one of them. Discipline, determination and drive are also very important. And it’s important to have supportive people around you, because you can’t achieve it on your own, even though tennis is an individual sport. You maybe need a bit of luck too. But the most important thing is to have self-belief and to never give up.”

Ana never did give up, even though she went through a difficult period after winning the 2008 French Open and rising to number one. She suffered injury and loss of form, and saw her ranking plunge to 63 before she battled her way back into the top 20. It is that belief in herself that first attracted her manager, Swiss businessman Dan Holzmann.

He first met Ana when she was 14 and was immediately impressed with her credentials. She was, not surprisingly, in need of financial assistance as she chased her goal of becoming a professional, and Holzmann invited Ana and her family to meet him in Basel.

“I asked Ana what she wanted from life,” he recalls from their first meeting. “She looked me in the eye and replied, 'I want to be number one in the world'. I was smitten at that moment. I took a quick decision that I would help her reach her goal.”

Ana thought she had messed things up when she played her first tournament after Holzmann has begun supporting her. She lost in the first round and didn’t come out of the changing room for four hours as she was afraid that he was going to end their agreement. “I played terribly,” said Ana. “I was worried he would leave, but then I quickly understood how much he believed in me, and that gave me extra confidence.”

Since those nervous early days, of course, his faith in her has been justified and she has paid back to him the $500,000 he invested in her. It has been a wonderful and rewarding relationship.

“It’s not a normal player-manager relationship,” explains Ana. “It’s more like a friend-friend relationship. We discuss things but we are also great friends and we have a lot of fun together. One of the most enjoyable things for me to do at a tournament is go out to dinner when Dan and the rest of the team is there.”

Her family have, of course, also provided great support for her, right from the days when her love for the sport was born. Times weren’t easy, and on her way to the French Open title she famously revealed how at one time she had to resort to practising in an abandoned swimming pool as there was nowhere else to play.

“I always receive unbelievable support from my family,” says Ana, who mother, Dragana, in particular is a familiar face on the WTA tour. “I owe them a lot. I enjoy tournaments the most when my whole family is there. The French Open and Wimbledon are extra special, because they always attend both.”

While some parents are notorious for ‘encouraging’ their daughter to play, aware of the vast riches success can bring, it was quite the opposite in the Ivanovic home. “Ana pushed us!” jokes Dragana. “We saw how much she loves tennis from an early age, so really we had no choice!”

And it wasn’t easy. Not only was it difficult to find a court, it was difficult even to get there! “Getting petrol was limited, so we couldn’t go to training by car every day,” she said. “But the solution was found. We borrowed two bicycles, so my father and I went to trainings and he carried my tennis bag on his back.”

Although it was tough, Ana never lost her enthusiasm for the game. In fact, she couldn’t get enough of it!

“Actually, when I was very young I don’t think I gave anything up. Tennis was always such a joy to play and they had to drag me off the court at the end of the coaching session! If I hadn’t been playing tennis so often I would probably have been doing some other sport. I was also quite academic and I enjoyed school.

“I think I had a great balance between tennis, school work and spending time with my family and friends. I had a very happy childhood and I am grateful to my parents for that.

“The ‘sacrifice’ was more when I was a teenager. I think for me the hardest thing was spending so much time away from my family from the age of about 12, when I started playing junior tournaments overseas. Fortunately my mum travelled with me, but I really missed my father and brother.”

The struggle of those early years have long since been overcome, and despite her huge success the Smiling Serb has kept her feet firmly on the ground to make her one of the most popular players on tour with not only her fellow players, but tournament organisers and the media. Absolutely everyone likes Ana, a tribute both to her and all the people around her.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Won the French Open in 2008 and was ranked world number one for 12 weeks. Also won Bali and Linz in 2010, Indian Wells and Linz in 2008, Berlin, Los Angeles and Luxembourg in 2007, Montreal in 2006 and Canberra in 2005. Runner-up at Indian Wells in 2009, the Australian Open in 2008 and at the French Open and Tokyo in 2007.

Blick Interview

Ana is today featured in Blick, the best-selling newspaper of Switzerland, where she is a resident.

The following is a translated extract from the interview with reporter Christian Buerge:

Blick: On a good day you convincingly beat top players like Vera Zvonareva and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Then 24 hours later you lose tamely against a nobody. What's behind this?
Ana: That example had to do with my back injury. But sometimes it's concerned with the head, with self-confidence. And often, everything is connected somehow. Success is sometimes easy. And sometimes it's complex.

You were perhaps the biggest Serbian star. Now it is Novak Djokovic. Do you have words for what he experienced this year?
I wish I could do the same thing and learn. It's crazy. He is a hero in Serbia. What he has achieved is the dream of every athlete. I'm so happy for him, because we are very close friends. I saw him with the title win in Australia and I know how happy he is.

You live in Basel. Where can one see Ana Ivanovic?
I live near the zoo. Sometimes I go to the wellness centre, to use the spa, the pool or to relax in the sauna. Or I go to Oliv, my favorite restaurant.

Ana "I'm not afraid of anyone!"

Ivanovic says that she will start again in the world top. I play to win all rivals, and the 2012th attack the top 10 and Grand Slam title - said the former first player of the world

WHEN in 2003. The Dutch coach Eric Van Harpen said that by 2012. Ana Ivanovic will become number one in the world and Grand Slam champion, the individuals in our country were laughing and shaking their rough hands.

Only, all of these unfaithful Tome vigorously choked and bit her tongue when she was a Serb, long before the above deadline, 2008. raised the cup high Roland Garros and became the best on the planet.

A similar situation is to some extent, repeated today, when the Anna's optimistic statements that will stay below 20 places on the list will soon become history and that he will return to the top, many regard with skepticism. Night-time critics do not have this time to bite their tongues, but to show patience and wait for a new team, led by British coach Nigel Sears, begin to make the first results.

And they both said Ivanovic in an exclusive interview with "Evening News" on the doorstep.
- With Nigel I started working after Wimbledon, and we came to be continuously ready, because they soon tournaments. However, after Bali, we are waiting a long preparation for 2012. that we take the best possible way. Our aim is that from the first tournament next year go full force. Of course, not easy to play quality competition after a long preparation, but I want to start from Brisbane fulfillment plans. The first is to get into the top ten and not attack any of the Grand Slam titles. I know it can - says Ana.

However, in the last three years have only won two titles, the smaller tournaments (Bali and Linz). On what, then, build your optimism?

- Yes, I am aware of that. But there are examples, such as Petra Kvitova, which did not win many tournaments, and has reached Grand Slam crown. Women's tennis is now such that you can not beat anybody, but that in the first round of play with a dangerous opponent. I have received Zvonareva and Kuznetsova circuit round in China, and with the opponents I could meet in the semifinals or finals of a Grand Slam.

Is there a rival to fear?

- No, not really there. However, the toughest opponent that I can western Serena Williams. It is a game where you can not enter into the rhythm. I think I can win it all. So here, the bell is number three in the world and I got by far. When I relaxed, and when you do not analyze too much on the field, I have a chance against all the players.

You get the best, and quite often do you lose an average of rivals in the early stages of the tournament. Why?

- There is a very important confidence. I had a lot of negative experiences and lost matches that should not happen. So I have more pressure and anxiety when I play with players who really need to get. However, I feel somehow that all changed for the better. In recent months I have some important victories, which will give me security. The game which I showed in the tournament in Beijing is a recipe that leads me to the top.

How do you comment on the story that no longer have a malicious motive, to play just because of commitments to sponsors and that there is no hunger for tennis and results?

- Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I know the truth, and I know what it is that motivates and inspires me. I have a great desire to win another Grand Slam, because I think it can. I do what at this point I think is best for me. There were many people who gave me the wrong advice, it is able to prevent and divert from the road. But I went through a lot and now I can own to make some decisions and choices. I know that my goal and what I want.

Are you satisfied with 26th place that currently occupy?

- Of course not. I find it very difficult, because I used to be at the top, although I do not look so much on marketing. I want to win tournaments, so I know it will be a better ranking. At competitions I have a feeling that people look at me that I am number one or number five, as I was at the top. In a way it creates pressure. Previously, I was ready to fulfill those expectations, but now that I play, I think that I belong to the top. However, to have and to prove the results, to which I am ready - concluded Ivanovic.

Kurir Stil cover interview

Ana is on the cover of the new issue of Kurir Stil magazine in Serbia.

The following is a translated extract from the question-and-answer session:

You are a role model for many kids in Serbia. How much do you think kids appreciate your experience and knowledge?
It's probably my biggest honour, to be someone that kids maybe look up to. I take this responsibility very seriously and I really enjoy taking part in activities with UNICEF. I think that it's important that they see that it is possible to achieve your goals, no matter how ambition they are, if you believe in yourself, and have the right people around you. I always encourage them in this way when I spend time with children, not just in Serbia.

Have you ever thought about what you will do when you finish your tennis career?
Not really, because I am still young and focused on achieving my goals in tennis. But I have been asked this question quite a lot and obviously that causes me to think about it a little. I am sure that tennis will always play some part in my life, and maybe I will go into some sort of business. That interests me.

What would you do for love, are you a romantic person, and do you listen to your heart or head when you are in love?
I am a romantic person, I like things such as candlelit dinners on the beach. For me it is important that in a relationship you are committed to the other person, but you retain your own identity – both of you.

Ana out in Luxemburg

Ana slipped to a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Britain's Anne Keothavong in the second round of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open.

The 23-year-old looked sluggish and, after leading 3-2, lost 12 of the next 14 games. Keothavong, on the other hand, produced one of her best ever performances.

The Briton looked confident and executed a fine array of forehand winners.

Ana's next event is the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali, which begins on Thursday 3 November.

Ana Ivanovic Interview in Luxemburg

Twenty-third player in the world, and sharp as ever, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia (23) is back in Kockelscheuer, the place of his debut on the WTA Tour in ... 2003 and his victory in 2007.

Ana, it's good to see you in Luxembourg. How are you?

I am very pleased to be here, as always. I recovered after my retirement in the quarter-finals in Beijing ten days ago. Moreover, I am accompanied by my physio. I suffered from lower back injury is a kind of spinal degeneration, which was probably already present for some time and that is kindled, which hurts me especially when I bow my legs. It is undoubtedly an evil that will not disappear anytime soon, so I must be very careful. But I felt good, I hit the ball well and I'm pretty fresh physically and in my head

What do you feel it come back to Kockelscheuer?

It's really great to be back here. It is a great tournament. I well remember having done my first steps on the WTA Tour here in Luxembourg in 2003. I did not even appear in the ranking, and they were very kind to give me a wild card for qualifying. In return, I had made them promise to return at least four times thereafter. This is something I will never forget. After my surrender to Beijing, and during my recovery, I told my coach: "I definitely want to be in Luxembourg," as the place is full of emotions and memories for me. In addition to my first professional tournament, I also won the title here in 2007. So it is something very, very special to me.

You are coached by Nigel Sears in July and your feelings with him are good ...

That is correct. We began our collaboration after Wimbledon, and have pursued the same goal: to improve my game that needed more structure and consistency. Next year the goal is to re-enter the Top 10, and hopefully win another Grand Slam.

Which way do you have left there to go to achieve these goals?

I am confident that my game is there, and can allow me to reach them, I just need to learn how to handle pressure. I had many more requests after winning a Grand Slam and occupied the place of No. 1 world, and I also generated a lot of expectations. It became like a new job for me, between what I had to do left and right to meet those demands. It's very hard. But I think I got rid of all these sides to Extrasport, having found the taste of the competition and be back on track, the game itself.

Tell us a little more detail the special relationship between a player and coach of top ...

This is very special and sometimes a bit complicated. For you are very often together, full time, even with your boyfriend or your family. This is a very intimate relationship, actually. But it's fun, too, because in a sense, it is the player who is the boss. Although of course, the coach tells you what to do. With a man, this is more than friendly relationship, I think. I guess it must be more difficult to be told what to do with a girl, which inevitably affects the relationship. Women are more emotional than men, and their mood more variable. But it is not our case. We have a very good communication with Nigel, and we know that we are pursuing the same goals.

And for yourself, how would you describe your mood on the court?

I am a very emotional, definitely. I've always been so. This is something that is in me, part of my personality. But it is also something I have to work, because sometimes, it turns against me instead of help me.

Ana Ivanovic has confirmed to play in Brisbane 2012

Ana Ivanovic, is confirmed to return to the Brisbane International in 2012.

Announced today the Serbian tennis star is looking forward to starting her Australian Open preparation in Queensland.

“I am very excited to be coming back to Brisbane next year,” Ivanovic said.

“I really enjoyed playing at the event in 2009 and 2010 and I’m looking forward to returning in January. It is one of my favourite times of the year and I love competing in Australia.

“The people are very friendly and open and I love the culture. Everyone is just so relaxed and easy going and laid back and that is what I really like.

“One of the main motivations for me to return to Brisbane is the upgrading to a Premier event. It was a great event already as an International, but now with the improvements they have made and a stronger player field, it’s an important event for me leading into the Australian Open.

“I have always had great support in Brisbane and I hope it will be the same in 2012.

“I reached the quarterfinals in 2009 and the semis in 2010 so it would be nice to make it to the final this time round. My goal is to win it.”

Brisbane International Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said he is thrilled that Ivanovic has committed to playing the Brisbane International next year.

“Ana is a huge drawcard for tennis fans in Queensland where she has always been popular, and I look forward to welcoming her back in 2012” Pearson said.

“Ana is a former French Open champion and her commitment is yet another endorsement of the event, which just gets bigger.

“Ana will be joined by fellow Grand Slam champions, Australia’s own Sam Stosur, current Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams in what will be the toughest contest seen in the women’s draw since the tournament commenced.”

China Open : Quarterfinals Interview

A. RADWANSKA/A. Ivanovic6-3, 3-2 (ret.)

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. (Through translation.) I would like to know about your injury, and will that affect your participation in the year-end Bali?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I've been struggling with my back since actually beginning of last week in Tokyo. Been doing lots of treatments on it, but it hasn't been really getting much better.
So I was fighting with it basically throughout the whole week. I went yesterday to do MRI here, so still the doctors are looking at the results. I'm talking to physios and just making sure about the next steps to see what's wrong and what's going on.
Yeah, it's too early to say anything.

Q. (Through translation.) When you're in China you have a lot of fans. Today on court, there were some fans coming from far, from the southern part of China. What would you like to say to them?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, it's very nice to see them and to get such big support here every time. I felt huge support, even today. It's very disappointing loss for me. I really hope I can recover fast and come back strong next year and see them again and stay probably longer.

Q. Unfortunately you quit the match. Do you think you have already got enough confidence since the China Open? And second question is quite similar to other journalist. I just met a family from your country, and they have a message they want me to give to you. It's in Serbian so I can't translate. Can you please translate to all the press tell something to this family?
ANA IVANOVIC: You want me to translate this?

Q. Yes.
ANA IVANOVIC: Just a family that obviously lives here, and they are watching me all the tournament and they wish me all the best. They would like to meet me. (Smiling.)

Q. And do you have anything you want to say to the people that come from your country?
ANA IVANOVIC: No, it's great support here always. We have lots of Serbians, and they been coming all week. It's nice to see our flag in the stadium here and on center court. I could hear them yell out things, which is always nice. It's always inspiration.

Q. You retired from Beijing Olympics three years ago, same court. It's not your first time to quit a match in this city. Do you think the city has some magic on you?
ANA IVANOVIC: I would like to think not. (Smiling.) I love coming here and competing. I think it's a little bit different story, you know. It was very tough to pull out of Olympics, and it's very tough today.
But, you know, this is something that's been going on for the whole week. Actually, I kind of surprised myself that I got to this stage at all. But because I been playing some really good tennis, it is very disappointing way to finish.

Q. Apart from the injury, actually you played pretty well at the tournament, very good shape and form. According to right now, your status, when do you think you can go back to a Grand Slam final even grab a major title?
ANA IVANOVIC: It's been inspirational to see the things I've been working on coming together in matches. I did play some great tennis this week, probably the best I played in years. It's very inspiring.
I really want to focus now, you know, if I'm going to play the next few tournaments I have this year, and then try to have a really good off-season.
Next year I think it's going to be a big year for me, and I really feel it's my opportunity to try and aim for the top again and maybe win a Grand Slam.

Q. Can you talk about what you think about your overall performance this year.
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I'm very happy with my performance. Like I said, I really felt I was playing some best tennis I been playing in years, and it's very exciting, you know.
I was striking the ball really well, and that's why it's very disappointing to finish this way, because I really felt I was on a roll and things were starting to fall into place.
But it's good incentive. It's important to see results in the matches, too.

Q. (Through translation.) We're very disappointed that you retired from the tournament. Will you go to the Bali year-end tournament? Also, during the match you have a shot that you made between the legs. In your daily practice do you have such an experience?
ANA IVANOVIC: I think it's the first time ever in my life I made that shot. But, yeah, I mean, it was very hard. Obviously I had troubles moving a lot, and especially jumping on my serve because I have no feeling in my leg. But, yeah, it's something that I'm discussing with the physios what's the best way to move forward.
Like I said, I'm still waiting on results from MRI to see how to approach it, but I really hope I can play in Linz and then also Bali -- in Luxembourg, sorry, and then Bali.
