Childhood interview : Official Website

Ana recently gave an interview to a Serbian magazine about her childhood.

The following is a translated extract:

What kind of baby were you? Is there an anecdote you can recount? Please describe your childhood and anything in particular you remember.
Ana: When I talk about my early childhood with my family there is always the story about me being a very demanding baby, and that I was exhausting my parents by refusing to sleep. That problem stayed over the years and I always felt I would miss something by sleeping. I was especially determined to refuse to go to bed when guests were coming for dinner, so probably I ruined most of the nice evenings my parents tried to have with their friends!

I loved kindergarten but when I was four my brother was born and from that moment on I refused to go there anymore. Life took on a new dimension and I did not want to miss anything at home with the new baby! I believe my first memories begin with the birth of my brother. My biggest wish was to have a brother or sister.

I remember that I loved when my parents would take me to my grandparents and leave me there for a day or two. That was fantastic as they would never say “no” and everything was allowed.

How was your first day at school? Did you fit in? What subject were you best at and how about sports? Were you loved by your teachers?
Ana: I could hardly wait to start going to school. More than anything I was very curious, but also I was looking forward to receiving assignments and tasks to solve. I was shy with kids but I always wanted to get the best possible marks. My competitiveness was already visible back then. I liked maths the most. Regarding gymnastics, that was certainly not my favourite subject as I already started practising tennis, and that was what I was interested in and not other forms of exercise.

Regarding professors, I always saw them as big authorities!

Where did you spend most of your summer holidays? What kind of music were you into? Where did you go out? Did you have to get your parents’ permission to go out in the late hours, and were your parents strict?
Ana: During my early childhood we would go to Greece for summer holidays and also a few times to Montenegro. We always went with a group of my parents’ friends and their kids and it was lots of fun. When I was in primary school I did not go out much and I don’t think many of my friends did. Besides birthday parties, not much was happening at that age.

We were listening to our popular pop music at that time like Tap 011, Luna and Moby Dick.

Regarding my parents, when I started going out they were very much worried if I would stay late. I cannot say they were strict, but they made sure I always told them where I was and with whom.

Did you ever quarrel with your parents? What kind of relationship do you have with your mother and father? Could you describe your relationship with your brother Milos?
Ana: My parents always tried to develop a relationship of trust with my brother and me. We could talk about everything openly. They also tried to always be there for us, to give us advice if we needed it but also to let us make decisions for ourselves.

Of course we had fights but mostly about small things like who had to do what at home. The fact that my mother and I were traveling a lot and our family was not together most of the time meant that we did not have too many opportunities to argue.

My brother and I are very close and I always missed him a lot. Milos is very good adviser and someone who can always make me laugh even when I am very sad. We are very protective of one another.

End of season thoughts

What an exciting end to the season that was. Often, after the US Open ends, thoughts turn straight away to the following season because that's when the next Grand Slam takes place: the majors are always my main focus.

This season was a little different, however. It was an uncertain and at times stressful end to the year, because of this back injury I had. Thanks for the great care of my physio and fitness trainer, I was able to get myself fit for my final events, and I'm obviously delighted with how the season ended.

What's especially cool about winning Bali is that it allows me to really relax on this holiday. I often felt almost guilty in the past, that I shouldn't be spending any time away from the court; now I know I am on the right path and that a short break will help my tennis. In short, I left for holidays on a high, and full of motivation for the new season to start again.

Nigel and I are working really well together. It's not yet been six months since we began working together, but I think the improvement in my game is clear. What is most exciting for us is that at no point in our partnership so far have we worked for more than two weeks straight together, away from tournaments. Now we will have a full month together, and that's huge.

If I can continue my improvement I am confident of achieving great things again. Having structure is so important, and the difference between now and last year - when I also won Bali - is that I now have a great team around me and there is no uncertainty.

It's a shame that Bali won't host a WTA tournament next year. During the event we joked, "if only I could play Bali every week". It was a lot of fun, off the court too.

My parents were with me, and two of their friends joined us, so we all spent a lot of time together. We had one of the most delicious meals ever at The St. Regis hotel early in the tournament, and we returned there after the final, for my birthday dinner.

I also visited a spa - you can't go to Bali without visiting a spa! I swam a little, and visited the beach. Bali is such a beautiful place.

I'll send you an update next month when I'm back on court. As always, I will spend the first 10 days or so of the off-season working only on fitness - with an occasional light hit now and then - but then tennis will become the focus. I've switched to a new racket, which I believe will add a little extra something to my game, so I'm excited about that as well.

Thanks everyone for your support this year. I think there is a lot to look forward to in 2012 :)

Love

Ana

Ana Ivanovic watches Adam Scott play at the Australian Open golf tournament

The former world No.1 has revealed that a desire to improve her Australian Open preparation is only a small reason she has agreed to play in the Apia International Sydney tournament at Olympic Park from January 8-14.

"I love the beaches. I love Manly. I love Bondi. It's hard to choose which to go for," Ivanovic said yesterday.

"I love the culture of going to the beach and having breakfast there and then just relaxing. The shopping is great. The harbour is really nice to walk around.

"I'm really excited to go back there. It's one of my favourite events."

Ivanovic will also play the Brisbane International in the first week of January.

Her decision to play back-to-back tournaments in Australia before the Australian Open comes just days after it was revealed she has rekindled her relationship with Aussie golfer Adam Scott. She was spotted yesterday cheering him on in the Australian Open at The Lakes Golf Club.
"All my friends back home get so jealous," she said of being on holiday in Australia.

"I get the text messages from them saying 'we're freezing'. And I'm here in Australia sunbathing during the Christmas time."

Ana to play Sydney in January

The Apia International Sydney has added another Grand Slam champion to its impressive 2012 line up, with Serbian star Ana Ivanovic confirming her participation today.

The world No.22, who won the WTA Tournament of Champions in Bali on Sunday, will return to Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre in January for the first time since 2008.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to go back there. It is one of my favourite events and I just love Sydney,” Ivanovic said.

“I had a great result there in 2008 when I reached the semi finals, so hopefully I can go a few steps further in 2012 and win the Apia International Sydney title.

“I think the fans there in Sydney are very enthusiastic and there is always a lot of Serbian fans who always cheer very loud for me, which is great.

“The field there is very strong and there are tough matches every round, which is exactly what you want heading into a Grand Slam event.”

Apia International Sydney Tournament Director Craig Watson said he was looking forward to welcoming Ivanovic back to the harbour city in the New Year.

“Ana has a lot of fans here and she is always very popular, so we are delighted that she will be finalising her Australian Open preparations here at the Apia International Sydney,” Watson said.

“There is a very strong Serbian community here in Sydney so I know she will have a lot of support when she takes to Ken Rosewall Arena.

“Ana is the fourth Grand Slam champion to commit to our event, along with Sam Stosur, Li Na and Lleyton Hewitt so 2012 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for the Apia International Sydney.”

Watson also said that more exciting additions to both the men’s and women’s line ups would be confirmed within the next fortnight.

He added, “I am pretty confident that we will have seven or eight of the world’s top ten women compete in Sydney next year which is a great endorsement of both the city and the event.”

In 2008, Ivanovic won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and reached the Australian Open final. She became world No. 1 on June 9 of the same year.

She was also a finalist at Roland Garros in 2007 and her best results at other Grand Slams include making the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2007, fourth round appearances at the US Open in 2007, 2010 and 2011.

Her best appearance at the Apia International Sydney came in 2008, when she reached the semi finals. She was also a quarter finalist in 2006 and 2007.

Ivanovic has eleven WTA Tour singles titles to her name and has amassed over $8.7 million in career prize money.

Ivanovic joins Sam Stosur, Li Na, Lleyton Hewitt and 2010 Sydney champion Marcos Baghdatis at Apia International Sydney 2012.

Tickets to the Apia International Sydney 2012 are on sale through Ticketek and can be purchased online at www.ticketek.com.au or 1300 888 104.

The Apia International Sydney will be held at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre from Sunday 8 to Saturday 14 January 2012.

Adam Scott talks about Ana Ivanovic

Having split-up from girlfriend Ana Ivanovic last year, Adam Scott has confirmed he is back together with the Serbian tennis star. Robin Barwick reports..

Adam Scott has revealed that he has rekindled his relationship with Ana Ivanovic, the photogenic Serbian tennis star, who he describes as “the most caring person I have ever met”.

Scott, 31, and Ivanovic, who turns 24 on November 6, first started seeing each other in July 2009, having met at the Wimbledon tennis championships in London, but then they broke-up a year later.

“Ana and I have just started seeing each other again,” stated Scott in an exclusive interview at the world final of the Mercedes Trophy in Stuttgart last month, where he was fulfilling an ambassadorial role for Mercedes-Benz. “We can see each other at some times, and not at others, but now we have found a way to make it work fine. What I have learned from the past is that if you want it to work, then it can, no problem at all.

“Ana is an incredible person. She is the most caring person I have ever met. It is very rare to find people like that anywhere, let alone in Ana’s position. She is very down to Earth and it is nice to be around her, and she has a great sense of humour too – she is a lot of fun. Actually, it can be quite hard for me to keep up – I’m a bit more serious.”

Scott was himself a bright prospect on the tennis court before golf took over in his teens, and he clearly revels in the challenge of going head to head with the 2008 French Open champion on the tennis court.

“Not that is has anything to do with why I am with Ana, but I do like tennis a lot,” he admits. “When I play tennis with Ana it’s not pretty. Ana is a powerful player, although I have figured her serve out! I can handle her serve, no problem at all, and I can ace Anna too.”

But then Scott’s bravado is overcome by a sense of humility: “To be honest, I can hardly win a game off her. I can win a few points but not a game. It’s just like golf; the more you practice, the more consistent you are. I could hit five good balls in tennis, but Ana could hit 15, so I just get worn out, and I can’t keep on getting good balls over the net. It’s fun to play Ana because I am pretty competitive and I like to think that I am pretty good at tennis, and then I go and get a real humbling on the tennis court and I just have to accept it. The problem I’ve got is that I like to think that on my day I could beat Nadal!”
