In one hour and 17 minutes, Ana Ivanovic defeated the American Vania King in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. It was not her best performance, but she won nevertheless. She struck 22 winners and 29 unforced errors, converted 5 of the 9 break point chances that she had, and served at 61%, although she hit 1 ace and 5 double faults.
During the first set, Ana started very well with a 3-0 lead, but King responded and broke Ana's serve at 3-1 before holding her own serve to draw level at 3-3. In the following game, Ana saved a break point and then held serve. Then, she broke King's serve again and comfortably served out the set to win it 6-3.
In the second set, Ana began by quickly falling behind 2-0, but then she broke King's serve and saved three break points in the following game before holding serve for 2-2. Then, Ana broke King's serve again and led 3-2 with a break. During the changeover, Ana asked for a trainer, who gave her pills but didn't give her a massage. Afterwards, Ana lost her serve for 3-3. Once again, Ana broke King's serve and quickly took a 5-3 leave. King then held the following game, but Ana served out the match to win 6-3, 6-4.
For her next match, Ana will play world #2 Petra Kvitova, who advanced when Kirilenko retired. Ana leads the head-to-head 3-0. She will play this match on Monday.
