Third Round Photos

Ana Lost to Kirilenko in Third Round

Ana suffered a 6-3, 6-1 defeat against Maria Kirilenko in the third round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The 23-year-old could not exploit her chances in the opening set and and the flawless Kirilenko capitalised, triumphing in 79 minutes.

A ten-minute opening game, in which Ana missed two breakpoints, set the tone for an intriguing first set. Both players were very businesslike on serve, but didn’t budge an inch during the first six games.

Ana earned another breakpoint in the seventh game of the set, but again was unable to convert it. This proved to be something of a turning point in the match, as Ana had been the superior player up to that moment.

In the following game, Ana’s delivery suddenly collapsed as she hit two successive double faults. Kirilenko gratefully accepted the gift, broke Ana’s serve and wrapped up the set.

After dropping the set, Ana lost her bearings. She hit three double faults in the first game of the second set and was instantly broken. A short revival, in which she disposed of three breakpoints, didn’t give solace. Kirilenko continued playing extremely solidly and earned another break to love in the fifth game, before being sealing victory two games later.

Ana will now head to Beijing for the China Open, which begins on Saturday.

Ana advanced to Second Round

Ana beat Australian Anastasia Rodionova 6-4, 6-0 in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The match began with the main stadium' roof open but rain began to fall with Ana leading 5-3, and was finished under cover.

Ana began the match sharply and led 3-0 after just eight minutes. She was far the superior player against an opponent who had trouble controlling both her shots and her emotions: Rodionova would frequently berate herself after unforced errors.

However, it was Rodionova who coped best with the half-hour stoppage in play, as she broke Ana as the 23-year-old served for the set.

Undeterred, Ana broke in the following game to seal the set.

In the second set Ana started to enjoy herself. She played some attractive, free flowing tennis, making use of the angles as much as her power.

"I'm happy with how I started the tournament," said Ana. "I was lucky that we have a roof here, so that we could finish the match.

"The first thing I noticed when I arrived at the site a few days ago was the speed of the courts: the surface is much slower and I like that. It's the same surface as the US Open, so it feels familiar and takes less time to adapt."

Ana takes on British wild card Laura Robson, who is ranked 146th, in round two. The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, but rain in Tokyo may cause a delay.

Ana takes part in Japan earthquake tribute

Ana was among a large group of WTA players who took to the main stadium court at the Ariake Coliseum on Sunday morning, to show their support for the victims of March's earthquake and tsunami disaster.

The players wore special "Tennis for Japan" t-shirts that carried the slogun "Our thoughts are with you". During the informal ceremony the players stood in unison and held up a banner that they had signed that read "gambaro! nippon!", a sentiment expressed to lift one's spirits.

Ana's first round match at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, against Russian-born Australian qualifier Anastasia Rodionova, is scheduled to take place at 11am local time (4am Central European Time; 10pm Eastern Time Sunday) on Monday.
